Google donates $1M to Haiti relief efforts

google logoSAN FRANCISCO – Google said Thursday it was donating $1million and Internet resources to relief organizations on the ground in earthquake-shattered Haiti.

The Internet giant said the money is intended to help with rescues as well as food, water, shelter, and medical support for victims of a deadly 7.0 magnitude temblor that devastated the poor Caribbean nation on Tuesday.

Haiti EarthquakeGoogle also created a Web page devoted to linking people with charitable groups including Direct Relief, Yele Haiti, the Red Cross, and Doctors Without Borders.

Google is also making online mapping and satellite imagery tools available to relief workers so they can better evaluate damage and coordinate responses.

Oxfam and Red Cross videos are spotlighted on the YouTube home page along with links for donating to Haiti relief efforts.
